Stepping Out

Read Matthew 14: 22-33

About four o'clock in the morning Jesus came to them, walking on the water! They screamed in terror, for they thought he was a ghost.

But Jesus immediately spoke to them, reassuring them. "Don't be afraid!" he said.

Then Peter called to him: "Sir, if it is really you, tell me to come over to you, walking on the water."

"All right," the Lord said, "come along!"

So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he looked around at the high waves, he was terrified and began to sink. "Save me, Lord!" he shouted.

Instantly Jesus reached out his hand and rescued him. "O man of little faith," Jesus said. "Why did you doubt me?" And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.

The others sat there, awestruck. "You really are the Son of God!" they exclaimed. Matthew 14: 25-33 (TLB)

Help me to do your will, for you are my God. Lead me in good paths, for your Spirit is good. Psalm 143:10 (TLB)

For a long time, Maria de los Angeles Velez, from Santiago, Chile, had wanted a change and to create a better future for herself. She was contemplating moving to another country. Maria knew she was not alone; Christ was with her. Her fervent prayer was for God to guide her.

During a Sunday worship service, she found the guidance she needed while thinking about the story where Jesus walks on water. Maria could easily visualize herself remaining in the boat, blessed to simply gaze upon the Lord's majesty. But it would be something altogether different to experience the glory of God, to walk on water with her eyes focused on Jesus, not on the roiling waters. What a blessing it is to hold fast to Jesus, to trust fully in his power!

It has been over a year since Maria left behind the life she used to know. Today she is in another country with new friends and new experiences. The gospel message continues to fill her with strength to follow the path God sets before her. As Maria steps out in faith, she knows God will not abandon her.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we need your guidance, grace, and love. Strengthen our resolve to keep our eyes on you as we journey in faith, in Jesus' name. Amen.
