Calling All Angels

We live within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods.

This I declare, that he alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him. For he rescues you from every trap, and protects you from the fatal plague. He will shield you with his wings! They will shelter you. His faithful promises are your armor. Now you don't need to be afraid of the dark any more, nor fear the dangers of the day; nor dread the plagues of darkness, nor disasters in the morning.

Though a thousand fall at my side, though ten thousand are dying around me, the evil will not touch me. I will see how the wicked are punished but I will not share it. For Jehovah is my refuge! I choose the God above all gods to shelter me. How then can evil overtake me or any plague come near? For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will steady you with their hands to keep you from stumbling against the rocks on the trail. Psalm 91: 1-12 (TLB)

In July 2020, Elly Sheeley, from Massachusetts, was diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer with metastases to other organs, and the prognosis was not optimistic. As Elly left the doctor's office, she thought of one of her favorite sings. The lyrics speak about calling angels to help so you don't have to walk alone. So Elly called, and many responded, including family, friends, church family, neighbors, healthcare professionals, and members of The Upper Room family from around the world.

Her treatment was set to begin mid-September. On September 1st, her pastor dropped off the September/October issue of The Upper Room, along with her favorite soup. The first mediation was written by an oncology nurse! And the meditations continued to speak to Elly throughout the rest of the issue. She stills has that issue and plans to keep it.

Elly considers all these people God's angels who walk the earth. They have answered her call; she has not walked alone. As Elly writes this, things are good. Not all days are easy, but she knows God's angels are always just around the corner - maybe with a smile, a "good morning," or a delivery of food. Angels walk the earth; watch for them.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for those you have sent to watch over us and walk beside us through difficult times. Grant us peace of body, mind, and spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen.
