Why Me?

Read James 1:2-12

Blesses is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12 (NRSV)

And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Romans 5:3-4 (NRSV)

Prison is a breeding ground for human suffering. Christopher King, from Virginia, having spent the better part of his adult life behind bars, has witnessed much pain. Countless times he has cried out to God "Why me?" Today's scripture readings remind us that God can use our suffering to change lives. Central to that plan is the transformation of our spirits.

For many of them behind bars, they have come to the point where the only place left to go is to their knees and cry out to God to forgive their transgressions and welcome them home like the prodigal son. Christopher spends his days in here trying to be the man that God created him to be, trying to use his experience and years of suffering to help others. Today he takes comfort in knowing that the Lord is using him as a vessel of compassion and love. Today he allows God to use his life as an example of true spiritual transformation. If we allow it, God will change us.

Prayer: Merciful God, use me to demonstrate your ability to mend broken hearts and transform lives, in Jesus name. Amen.
