When You're Smiling
Now the Lord said to Moses, "Tell Aaron and his sons that they are to give this special blessing to the people of Israel: 'May the Lord bless and protect you; may the Lord's face radiate with joy because of you; may he be gracious to you, show you his favor, and give you his peace.' This is how Aaron and his sons shall call down my blessings upon the people of Israel; and I myself will personally bless them. Numbers 6: 22-27 (TLB)
From 4:00 to 6:00 each morning, Laura Cristina Quintana de Mota, from the Dominican Republic, spends time in prayer and devotion. She finds it the best time to engage in conversation with God, praising and thanking God for each new day. As she was meditating one morning, she thought: 'What does God's smile look like? What can we do to make God smile?' Just then, the young man who delivers the newspaper came by. Every morning when he greets her with a warm smile and hug, Laura imagines God smiling upon her.
A smile can bring encouragement to someone who is sad or lonely, a way of saying to someone who is heartbroken, "Wait on the Lord. God loves you and so do I." A good deed paired with a smile can assist the vulnerable, the aged, children without parents. It can give support to the local vendor who works diligently to supply fresh fruits and vegetables. A passing smile to those we encounter might be just enough to offer hope.
What does God's smile look like? It looks like the smile we bestow on all those around us. It looks like the joy we bring to others in our words and deeds. When Laura returns a smile, she knows that God is smiling upon her as well.
Smiles are free and take less effort than frowning. How about smiling today no matter how you feel inside. One of my favorite sayings is "Fake it till you make it!" You may find at first it is an effort but if you hang in there, you will find that soon smiling just comes naturally.
Prayer: God of joy and blessing, thank you for your smile that we see reflected each day on the faces of all who believe in you, in Jesus' name, amen.
