Whatever We Need
"And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work." 2 Corinthians 9:8 (NRSV)
Alexander Holcomb is from Tennessee. When he was in college, he worked at a beautiful summer camp far away from home. He had no time off, except for one week halfway through the summer. Like most of his fellow counselors, he planned to stay on at camp during that week so they could enjoy having the place to themselves. One day, though. Alexander felt the Lord urging him to visit his family; while he wrestled with it at first, he finally decided to go.
As he was trying to leave, his car broke down. Distraught because he was having to disappoint his family, he began to question why God would lead him to do something he couldn't do. Had he misheard God? When one of his fellow camp counselors offered to let me drive his car the hundreds of miles it would take him to get home and back, Alexander was amazed at his generosity. In the midst of his surprise and joy at his offer, Alexander remembered the way he had questioned God's faithfulness.
In that moment, he learned that if God leads us to do something. God will also provide us the means to do it. Now, whenever Alexander starts to get frustrated when life unfolds in a way he doesn't expect, he thinks of that day and watches for the way God will work within his circumstances to bring about good.
We also need to watch and wait for God to do whatever He promised. His word is true and He will not fail. Sometimes we just need to be patient and trust him; He just might be testing our faith.
Prayer: Dear God, calm our minds and hearts with the knowledge that You are always present with us. Help us to be more trusting and patient, in Jesus' name, amen.
