What No Longer Works
Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 - In Christ, there is a new creation.
"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins." Mark 2:22 (NRSV)
It had been a year since April Bogert, from New York, last made applesauce from fresh apples. She was eager to get into the task and gathered her tools quickly. As she started to prepare the apples for cooking, she was struggling to core them. Then she remembered she had bought a new apple corer - yet she was still struggling with the old, dull one. Why had she not simply discarded the old one that no longer worked well?
It can be like that in April's spiritual life too. She clings to old routines and old habits that no longer serve her well. As today's passage from 2 Corinthians tells us, in Christ we are new - the old is gone.
April makes life more difficult when she refuses to part with what no longer works, forgetting to seek God's guidance and use the new ways that God gives her. Reading scripture from a new perspective and discussing what she reads with other Christians helps. And always, we can pray, asking God for enlightenment and guidance.
How many of us are like April; hanging onto old habits and finding difficulty in embracing new ones? Asking God is a good way to obtain the help we need to change our ways.
Prayer: Loving God, help us to discard our old ways and remain open to new experiences and fresh perspectives that bring us closer to you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
