God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times of trouble. And so we need not fear even if the world blows up, and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam; let the mountains tremble!
There is a river of joy flowing through the City of our God - the sacred home of the God above all gods. God himself is living in that City; therefore it stands unmoved despite the turmoil everywhere. He will not delay his help. The nations rant and rave in anger - but when God speaks, the earth melts in submission and kingdoms totter into ruin.
The Commander of the armies of heaven is here among us. He, the God of Jacob, has come to rescue us.
Come, see the glorious things that our God does, how he brings ruin upon the world, and causes wars to end throughout the earth, breaking and burning every weapon. "Stand silent! Know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation in the world!" The Commander of the heavenly armies is here among us! He, the God of Jacob, has come to rescue us! Psalm 46 (TLB)
Teresa L. Seaburg is from Texas. Several months each year, their community becomes home to a pair of baled eagles who return to a sturdy group of tall pine trees located directly across from their church. They nest, lay eggs, and nurture their eaglets until their offspring fledge and learn to hunt and care for themselves.
Often large groups of onlookers gather to observe the eagles' comings and goings. Everyone seems amazed and in awe at the sight of one of the majestic eagle parents poised on a branch nearby the gigantic nest, guarding its young.
Each time Teresa sees crowds gathered to admire these protective birds and their devotion to their young, she thinks of our own protective Parent's constant devotion to all of us. The presence of eagles may be rare, but God's presence isn't. And like the eagle parent, God is always poised nearby to guard us. God never leaves us, even when we think we can care for ourselves.
May we always be amazed and in awe of God's constant presence, and may we look to God with admiration, giving thanks that God is forever our watchful parent.
Prayer: Creator of all, help us to keep our gaze fixed on you and to give you all glory, honor, and praise for all that you do, in Jesus' name. Amen.
