Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:28-31 (NRSV)
Berthille Laveist-Chittick is from St. Maarten. She hates waiting. For her waiting is wasting time. She wants the plane to take off once she is seated. She expects the server to bring the food soon after she places her order at a restaurant. Waiting makes her feel angry, frustrated, even hopeless. Anyone ever feel like her?
After her home was damaged by Hurricane Irma, Berthille's nephew said he would handle the repairs. But after she had waited two weeks, he still had not begun. Having little damage to her home, Berthille had thought her repairs would happen fast. But that was not the case; she had to wait. But as she waited, she learned that through the prophet Isaiah the Lord tells us that waiting can be a good thing. The prophet says, "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength."
Shifting her attitude from one of "impatiently waiting" to one of "waiting upon the Lord" has taught her that God is working while she is waiting. This perspective has opened her eyes to the many gifts her heavenly Father has given her since she learned to wait. These gifts include renewed strength and purpose for her life. It is amazing what can happen when we change our attitudes.
God works on a different timetable than ours. If we are open as we wait, God can bless and shape us into the people God wants us to be. So how open are you? Are you willing to change your attitude and wait upon the Lord, or do you believe God should change his attitude and wait upon you?
Prayer: Father God, teach us to wait upon you. Help us to know that you are always working for our good. Help us to have positive attitudes, in Jesus' name ,amen.
