But the Lord said to Samuel, "Don't judge by a man's face or height, for this is not the one. I don't make decisions the way you do! Men judge by outward appearance, but I look at a man's thoughts and intentions."

"The Lord has not chosen any of them," Samuel told Jesse. "Are these all there are?"

"Well, there is the youngest," Jesse replied. :But he's out in the fields watching the sheep."

"Send for him at once," Samuel said, "for we will not sit down to eat until he arrives."

So Jesse sent for him. He was a fine looking boy, ruddy-faced, and with pleasant eyes, And the Lord said, "This is the one, anoint him."

So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the olive oil he had brought and poured it upon David's head; and the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him and gave him great power from that day onward. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. 1 Samuel 16: 7; 19-13 (TLB)

Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous - and how well I know it.

How precious it is, Lord, to realize that you are thinking about me constantly! Psalm 139: 14; 17 (TLB)

Sahana Mathias is from Karnataka, India. As a five-foot-tall teenager with a poor complexion, Sahana was always on the receiving end of jokes. Her so-called friends called her by nicknames that referenced her height, and her well-meaning relatives recommended creams for her skin and exercises to help her grow taller. All this depressed her to no end. Then she went to a new city for school, and people started recognizing her for her academic abilities. It was a turning point for Sahana.

Because she was focused on her strengths and abilities, Sahana was no longer bothered by what she did not have. She was able to laugh along with people who made fun of her height. Ever since, she has made it a point to counsel people, especially kids who are bullied for their appearance. God had used her and blessed her wonderfully.

As we read in 1 Samuel 16, while we see outward appearances, the Lord looks at the heart. There are many instances in the Bible where God used a variety of different people for God's glory - Moses, Samson, Mary, Zacchaeus. It's easy to concentrate on what we do not have, but let us praise God for the wonderful life we have been given and use it to God's glory.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the unique talents that you have given each of us. Use us to bring you glory, in Jesus' name. Amen.
