Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love makes up for many faults. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay for the night.
God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God's many kinds of blessings. Are you called to preach? Then preach as though God himself were speaking through you. Are you called to help others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies, so that God will be glorified through Jesus Christ - to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4: 8-11 (TLB)
Everyone one must make up his own mind as to how much he should give. Don't force anyone to give more than he really wants to, for cheerful givers are the ones God prizes. 2 Corinthians 9:7 (TLB)
Victoria Walsh is from Montana. It always gives her heart a lift in the morning to put out some crumbs for the squirrels and birds in the yard outside her apartment. She enjoys watching them come and busily feast on their find. Although she knows it's our heavenly Father who ultimately provides for all creatures (see Matt. 6:26), she loves that she gets to be an instrument in that process.
She loves the fact that God's care can flow through her to those in need. But she doesn't have much money, and she often feels frustrated that she can't do more. Yet she gives whatever she can and feels blessed to be able to do so.
Then she reminds herself that true wealth is having something - anything - to give away. Such wealth means sharing something of herself. It means being able to alleviate suffering or just enrich another's life. In addition to whatever financial resources she has, her spirit rejoices when she can offer a kind word, a listening ear, a home-cooked meal, godly advice, an encouraging smile, a thoughtful gesture, or simply her time.
Even if all she has to give are crumbs, she is indeed rich when she gives to others with love.
Prayer: Dear Father, help us always to give cheerfully, as you so faithfully give to us, in Jesus' name. Amen.
