Traces of Faith
Paul writes: How I thank God for you, Timothy. I pray for you every day, and many times during the long nights. I beg my God to bless you richly. He is my fathers' God, and mine, and my only purpose in life is to please him.
How I long to see you again. How happy I would be, for I remember your tears as we left each other.
I know how much you trust the Lord, just as your mother Eunice and your grandmother Lois do; and I feel sure you are still trusting him as much as ever. 2 Timothy 1: 3-5 (TLB)
Praise the Lord! for all who fear God and trust in him are blessed beyond expression. Yes, happy is the man who delights in doing his commands. Psalm 112: 1 (TLB)
Anna Kerekretine Szili lives in Budapest, Hungary. One warm summer day, her mother took her brother and Anna by the hand and led them into the "clean room." In Hungary, until the last century, the clean room was a special part of the home, particularly in village houses. It was considered the nicest room and used only for special occasions or for hosting guests.
That day, they knelt together and prayed in the pleasant coolness of the room. First they listened as Mother prayed. She poured out her fears for their sick father while weaving in the events and feelings of their everyday lives with thanksgiving. Then Anna's brother and she spoke their own prayers.
The clean room in their house showed traces of their faith. They prayed together so much in this room that there were marks in the carpet showing where they knelt. Anna remembers the comfort, peace, and good feelings from these times of prayer. The way her mother lived out her deep faith left a strong impression on Anna; it led her to a loving and caring relationship with Jesus Christ.
In today's scripture reading, the apostle Paul recalls the sincere faith Timothy's grandmother and mother had passed on. Timothy bore the traces of his family's faith. How good it is to be people of faith and to express our questions and fears with thanksgiving in prayer!
So what is your purpose in life - to please God or yourself? Do you have someone in your life that sets a good example of their faith in God? If you have someone, that is wonderful, but if you don't, then look to Jesus to show you how to live a life of faith.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for listening to all the thoughts, desires, and joys of our hearts. Thank you for giving us mothers, fathers, grandparents, and friends that can help us have faith in you by the example they set in their own lives. Thank you for Jesus, who is the best example of all. We pray in His precious name, amen.
