Toward the Light
"Who ever heard of someone lighting a lamp and then covering it up to keep it from shining? No, lamps are mounted in the open where they can be seen. This illustrates the fact that someday everything [in men's hearts] shall be brought to light and made plain to all. So, be careful how you listen; for whoever has, to him shall be given more; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him." Luke 8: 16-18 (TLB)
Later, in one of his talks, Jesus said to the people, "I am the Light of the world. So if you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness, for living light will flood your path." John 8:12 (TLB)
Keith Honeyman lives in Western Cape, South Africa. Every evening at bedtime, he heads toward his room and switches off the lights along the way. Years ago Keith lost his sight in one eye, and his remaining vision is dimming with age. But despite the dark, Keith is confident that he will not trip or fall as he heads toward the light shining from his destination because it illuminates his way. If he remembers something that he has forgotten and turns back, he is immediately in trouble because his body blocks the light and Keith is walking in his own shadow.
This reminds Keith of his daily walk with Jesus. For over 64 years, since he was a teenager, Keith has tried to walk toward God's light. But when he has turned away and walked in the shadow of his own choices and actions, he has often been in trouble. It is awesome to know that no matter how dark it is, we are always able to find God's light by turning toward our Lord in our actions and prayers.
Prayer: Lord of light, guide us so that we may walk in the brilliance of your presence, in Jesus' name. Amen.
