Today and Forever

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient; we were misled by others and became slaves to many evil pleasures and wicked desires. Our lives were full of resentment and envy. We hated others and they hated us.

But, when the time came for the kindness and love of God our Savior to appear, then he saved us - not because we were good enough to be saved, but because of his kindness and pity - by washing away our sins and giving us the new joy of the indwelling Holy Spirit whom he poured out upon us with wonderful fullness - and all because of his great kindness, and now we can share in the wealth of the eternal life he gives us, and we are eagerly looking forward to receiving it.

Titus: 3: 3-7 (TLB)

Stay away from the love of money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, "I will never, never fail you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13:5 (TLB)

The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the worst-performing teams in baseball for the past few years. But as a life-long Orioles fan, Mark Karpinski, from North Carolina, stills roots for them. If Mark stopped cheering for the Orioles because they have been a losing team recently, he would be a "fair-weather fan," someone who cheers for a team when they are doing well but ignores them when they are doing poorly.

Sometimes Mark acts as if he worships and follows a "fair-weather God." That is, Mark mistakenly believes that when he is good and obedient, God is near to him and blesses him. But when he stumbles and falters, God pulls away and ignores him. But the truth is, we have a loving God who is with us always, during our successes and our failures.

Titus 3:4 states, "When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy." God's desire is always to be close to us so that we can live in joyful service in this life and look forward to spending eternity in heaven with God. Mark won't give up on the Orioles. Most important, God never gives up on us.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your promise always to remain close to us. Help us always to remain faithful to you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
