Time Well Spent
He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.
1 Kings 19; 11-12 (NRSV)
Judy Ransom is from Florida. While brushing her teeth one morning, instead of pondering what she needed to accomplish that day she began mentally reciting a scripture she had memorized. God used that moment to show her something in a Bible verse that she had never noticed, enhancing her understanding and filling her with gratitude.
She marvel that God would teach her during such a mundane task. How wondrously God created our minds, to be able to perform routine chores without thinking about them so that we can focus our thoughts on other matters! Judy usually fills everyday activities with her own plans for the day, instead of quietly seeking God's wisdom and direction. How often does she miss God's still small voice because of her planning?
Judy no longer dreads daily tasks she once thought boring or unimportant, Instead, she has come to see them as opportunities to quiet her thoughts and focus on God in prayer and meditation. God can use those times to draw her closer, teaching her, inspiring her, and strengthening her life of discipleship.
Prayer: Dear God, forgive us when we crowd you out of our daily routines. Help us to use even the mundane tasks of each day to focus on you and your wisdom, in Jesus' name. Amen.
