Time is Precious
Read Psalm 18: 1-19 (However if you have time, read all of Psalm 18. It was written by David when the Lord delivered him from his many enemies, including Saul.)
(The Lord) brought me out into a spacious places; he rescued me because he delighted in me. Psalm 18: 19 (NIV)
He rescues me from my enemies; he holds me safely out of their reach and saves me from these powerful opponents. For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations. Many times you have miraculously rescued me, the king you appointed. You have been loving and kind to me and will be to my descendants. Psalm 18: 48-50 (TLB)
Jane Rager lives in Virginia. As her grandchildren grow up, she sees less and less of them. They are busy with school, friends, work, and social obligations. Several weeks ago, Jane and her husband visited their daughter on a Sunday afternoon. Usually they catch a peek of the grandchildren as they hustle about, caught up in their activities. They always get a smile and a warm hug as they race out the door to the next thing. But this Sunday was different. They stayed home and turned off their electronic devices for the afternoon. What a blessing to spend uninterrupted time with them!
On their way home, Jane reflected on how she spends time with God. Sometimes she is so busy with her own life that she rushes through her prayers, anxious to get on with her next activity. Sometimes she gets caught up in the latest book or TV show, which cuts into the time she could spend being with God. Her busyness gets in the way of experiencing God's abiding love.
Jane decided then to spend time with God as her grandchildren spent time with her that Sunday afternoon, just enjoying God's presence with no interruptions and no expectations. These precious visits have become the highlight of her day.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for always being present, even when we are too busy to notice. Help us to realize the joy of spending time in your presence, in Jesus' name. Amen.
