Through the Fog
Read 1 Samuel 3:2-11 - the calling of Samuel
Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening." 1 Samuel 3:10 (NRSV)
Traveling through a thick fog, Tim Tate, from Virginia, was listening to a devotional program based on the calling of Samuel. The speaker gave an invitation simply to pray Samuel's prayer, "Speak [LORD], for your servant is listening." Then we were to be silent and listen.
The road on which Tim was traveling was crooked, and the thick fog created even more danger. Tim passed fields and thickets of trees from which deer could easily veer into his path. He cautiously navigated the road ahead and prayed, "Speak [LORD], for your servant is listening."
God spoke by revealing how that moment was a great analogy for how to live by faith. Tim thought about how often it feels as if we are living in a fog, enveloped in the cares of our world while doing our best to follow the path before us. Then God reminded Tim that though the road ahead can be dark and winding, the light of Christ is always with us, leading us to where we need to be.
Tim realized in that moment that if he trusts the guiding light of God's care, he will ultimately be okay. He did make it safely to his destination, with the words of Samuel still echoing in his mind: "Speak [LORD], for your servant is listening."
Are you listening for God to speak to you? May we all open our ears, and minds, to hear God when He speaks.
Prayer: O God, be forever the light before us and the voice that calls us. Help us to listen and respond, in Jesus' name. Amen
