There Is Hope

O God, my God! How I search for you! How I thirst for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. How I long to find you! How I wish I could go into your sanctuary to see your strength and glory, for your love and kindness are better to me than life itself. How I praise you! I will bless you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. At last I shall be fully satisfied; I will praise you with great joy.

I lie awake at night thinking of you - of how much you have helped me - and how I rejoice through the night beneath the protecting shadow of your wings. I follow close behind you, protected by your strong right arm. Psalm 63: 1-8 (TLB)

Vimbai Chizarura is from Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe. "One, two, three, four...." As the test administrator counted aloud Vimbai's incorrect answers. She knew that she had failed the provisional driver's license exam. She had done so much in preparation for the exam. She had thoroughly studied the learner's license handbook. She had taken pictures to go on her license, and she had paid for the exam. Where did I go wrong? Vimbai kept asking herself.

She dragged her feet on the way to tell her parents. She decided that she was so hurt that she would not retake the test any time soon. It took her a year before she decided to try again. During that time Vimbai came across this verse: "For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease" (Job 14:7, KJV). Vimbai realized there was hope. She had not passed before, but she could try again. She retook the exam, and by the grace of God, she passed!

We all face situations or seasons that make us lose hope. Sometimes we try our best, and it is not enough. But God is forever ready to help us keep going. When we want to give up, let us surrender our situation to God with hope that God will see us through.

Prayer: God of hope, we call upon your name and your help in our times of need. When we want to give up, help us to keep going, in Jesus' name. Amen.
