The Ultimate Guide
Is there any such thing as Christians cheering each other up? Do you love me enough to want to help me? Does it mean anything to you that we are brothers in the Lord, sharing the same Spirit? Are your hearts tender and sympathetic at all? Then make me truly happy by loving each other and agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, working together with one heart and mind and purpose.
Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing.
Your attitude should be the kind that was shown us by Jesus Christ, who, though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God, but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men. Philippians 2:1-7 (TLB)
Robert E. Boertien lives in Oregon. While hiking a mountain trail on his way to explore an abandoned gold mine, Robert thought of the elderly man who had shown him the trailhead and described his hike up this same path 30 years ago. He also thought of the miners who must have made this trek countless times when the mine was operational over 100 years ago. They would have seen the same clear stream rushing along the trail, the same towering peaks, and even some of the same trees. They would have experienced the same challenges and undoubted many more.
Such is our spiritual journey. Others have gone before us, and the path is there for us to follow. We have the ultimate guide in Jesus Christ, and we can follow in his footsteps to avoid becoming lost. If we accept Jesus as our guide, it is important for us also to accept the responsibility of helping others we may meet along the way, whether their needs are physical, emotional, or spiritual. Jesus would not have left them behind, and so we are called to help those around us as well.
Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for those who came before us to guide us on the path to salvation. Thank you most of all for the example given us by Christ Jesus as we attempt to follow in his footsteps. We humbly pray in His Holy name, amen.
