The Road Ahead
Look straight ahead; don't even turn your head to look. Watch your step. Stick to the path and be safe. Don't sidetrack; pull back your foot from danger. Proverbs 4:25-27 (TLB)
Peg Arnold lives in Colorado. As her five-year-old granddaughter learns to ride her bike without training wheels, she loves to join Peg on bike rides. Peg chooses safe routes with minimal traffic and watches as she gains confidence in her balance and skill. Yet she still needs verbal reminders to keep her eyes on the road. Every duck, unique rock, or pretty flower distracts her. Turning her attention away from the road, she veers off the path, sometimes resulting in near disaster.
Peg can also become distracted and serve off course. For example, when she is discouraged, she finds herself focusing on the negative things of life. She takes her eyes off the road and ends up floundering in grief and self-pity, crashing into thorns of despair. Fixing her eyes on God, who is leading the way, helps to keep Peg on the path.
Peg's granddaughter has Peg's voice to direct her focus back on the road ahead. Peg has learned that she can also hear the voice of God calling her back to the road when she spends time with God, prays unceasingly, trusts God, and expresses gratitude. In God, Peg always has someone looking out for her best interests.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for going before us and protecting us even when we don't realize it. Help us to trust in you and hear your voice as you call back to your path, in Jesus' name. Amen.
