The Master Architect
"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell - and great was its fall!" Matthew 7:24-27 (NRSV)
The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps. Proverbs 16: 9 (NRSV)
Antonio Delapaz is from Texas. When he was growing up, he longed to know how his life would play out. Maybe he would be a professional soccer player or a successful business owner. But during his mid-teens, his life took a drastic turn, and Antonio was sent to prison. He thought his life was ruined, and he felt hopeless. Sitting in his cell, he replayed his life as if it were a movie. Antonio looked at every scene from every angle. After much evaluation, he came to understand that everything he had chased after was meaningless.
One day in that lonely cell God called to him. From that moment on, his life took a turn for the better. He felt that God was building his life on a solid foundation. Even now, God is continuing to create something new in him. And when he thinks of the years past, Antonio can see God, the Master Architect, at work. God has been building his new life, one step at a time.
When our lives seem aimless and purposeless, we can learn to trust God, the Creator and Sustainer of life. When we trust God's directions, we can be assured that God will lead us to a life of goodness and purpose.
Prayer: Dear God, guide our steps so that we can build your kingdom, in Jesus' name, amen.
