The Best Place
"Let not your heart be troubled. You are trusting God, now trust in me. There are many homes up there where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with me where I am. If this weren't so, I would tell you plainly. And you know where I am going and how to get there." John 14:1-4 (TLB)
Whom have I in heaven but you! And I desire no one on earth as much as you! Psalms 73:25 (TLB)
Marlene Legaspi-Munar lives in Batangas in the Philippines. After their father died following a prolonged illness, Marlene and her siblings tried to care for their mother by renovating her house and making travel plans for her to see friends and family. She was excited to have her roof fixed, create a small garden, and spend time with loved ones. Then, suddenly, she died in her sleep.
Her passing was incredibly painful for them, not only because it was unexpected but because they had also lost their father so recently. Whereas their father's illness allowed them some time to prepare for his death, they did not expect their mother to pass away so soon after. The reality of losing both parents seemed unbearable.
The morning after her interment, Marlene was filled with sadness. Hoping to find encouragement, she turned to the Bible and saw Psalm 73:25. She took that verse as a heaven-sent message for her. It was as if her mother was assuring Marlene that she was in the best place possible - with God in heaven. While we get a taste of God's goodness on earth, everything will finally be made right in the Afterlife (John 14:14). Marlene misses her parents, but the thought of their rejoicing in the presence of God eases her pain.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when we are faced with death, help us to hold on to the hope of heaven where we will join the communion of saints and rejoice in your presence, in Jesus' name. Amen.
