The Bedspread

This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours! For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than yours, and my thoughts than yours.

as the rain and snow come down from heaven and stay upon the ground to water the earth, and cause the grain to grow and to produce seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry, so also is my Word. I send it out and it always produces fruit. It shall accomplish all I want it to, and prosper everywhere I send it. You will live i joy and peace. The mountains and hills, the trees of the field -- all the world around you -- will rejoice. Where once were thorns, fir trees will grow; where briars grew, the myrtle trees will sprout up. This miracle will make the Lord's name very great and be an everlasting sign [of God's power and love]. Isaiah 55:8-13 (TLB)

Oystein Brinch is from Oslo, Norway. When she was young, her mother taught her how to knit and cross-stitch. These skills have given her many hours of pleasure through the years. Oystein is now in her seventies, and a friend of hers recently taught her how to crochet. She started out by making some simple potholders. But after that she began crocheting a bedspread of al things!

Her friend showed her an intricate pattern that has been used for generations. When she first started, it looked like just a random group of knots and twists. Every patch she crocheted seemed mismatched and not very pretty. But when she stitched the patches together, Oystein saw a beautiful design that she could not see when she began.

This reminds her of the times in her life when she has experienced challenges. When she is in the middle of challenges, it is impossible for her to determine a purpose in her situation. She wonders, Why is this happening to me? But in time, God always shows her a larger picture. As the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 13:12, "Now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."

Prayer: Dear God, thank you that your thoughts are higher than ours and for caring for us with your everlasting love, in Jesus' name. Amen.
