Read Luke 10: 25-37 - The story of the Good Samaritan
"In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets." Matthew 7:12 (NRSV)
Rebecca Auger lives in North Carolina. One day in school, she saw classmates bullying a girl in her class. They ganged up on her, saying really mean things to her. She seemed on the verge of tears. But instead of defending her, Rebecca walked away and let her fend for herself. Rebecca could have supported her, but instead she thought only of herself and decided not to get involved.
Later she thought,"If someone were saying those mean things to me, I would have been upset and hurt. Even if someone thought about standing up for me, it would mean nothing if he or she just thought about it!"
The next time the bullies made fun of her, Rebecca walked up to them and told them to stop. Some of Rebecca's friends came with her to defend her. We took the girl away from the bullies and asked if she was okay. It turns out that she was going through a really hard time, even having suicidal thoughts.
Eventually the bullies left her alone. Meanwhile, that girl became Rebecca's good friend and slowly regained her self-respect. That day Rebeca learned that a small act, like standing up for someone, can make a huge difference for the person on the other end.
Sometimes it is frighting to stand up to bullies, but there is a saying, "When fear knocks at the door, open it and it will be gone." When God is on our side, we don't have to be afraid.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to stand with others during difficult times and to treat others the way we want to be treated, in Jesus' name, amen.
