Spiritual Nutrition

Read Deuteronomy 6: 1-9

You must love him with all your heart, soul, and might. And you must think constantly about these commandments I am giving you today. You must teach them to your children and talk about them when you are out for a walk; at bedtime and first thing in the morning. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (TLB)

Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is older, he will remain on it. Proverbs 22:6 (TLB)

Neeta Nayna Macwan is from Gujarat, India. When she was about seven years old, her mother became bedridden with tuberculosis, making it impossible for her to take care of Neeta and her two brothers. But still she invested in their spiritual growth. Although she had to rely on others to provide Neeta and her brothers with physical nutrition, she made sure they received spiritual nutrition. She would write down the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and Psalm 23 for them to learn. She would give them Bible verses to memorize every day, and Neeta still remembers her face beaming with joy when they spoke those verses aloud for her. She passed on her habit of reading The Upper Room devotional every day, and it was through her that they grew in faith.

Neeta's mother's commitment to their spiritual growth became one of her most important legacies. After she died, they held on to their faith and grew into an even stronger relationship with God. This closeness to God has helped them through times of grief and other challenges of life.

Even though their mother was with them for only a short period of time, Neeta is grateful that she taught them how to praise and serve God. Just as her mother encouraged them in their faith, they can be mentors to others as they grow in faith.

Prayer: Loving Father, thank you for the gift of those who love and care for us physically and spiritually, in Jesus' name. Amen.

My mother, Ruby Walker
