Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40: 28-31 (NRSV)
An overnight bag sat in the backseat as the car engine hummed. Kelli K, Walker, from Missouri, was about to begin her long drive for another trrip to care for a family member. Before pulling out of her driveway, she laid her head on the steering wheel and closed her eyes, silently asking God to sustain her through the coming days.
Challenged emotionally and physically, Kelli had been encouraged when God brought Isaiah 40:31 to her attention in her scripture study. She kept a handwritten note on her living room table - a visual reminder that she could look to, meditate on and memorize. The verse assured her that she would receive strength by placing her hope in God.
A few miles into her journey, Kelli caught a glimpse of something white in the blue sky. When she looked, she recognized the white tail feathers of a bald eagle. It had soared directly over her car as Kelli traveled down the highway. Kelli began to cry as she remembered God's promise in her memorized verse.
She had not been looking for a physical sign of God's promise, but oh, how welcome it was! God was with her and gave her the stamina she needed. And God will continue to strengthen her as she places her hope and trust on God's power.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us strength when we are weak and weary. Help us to rely on you instead of our own limited power and ability, in Jesus' name. Amen.
