"So Help Me, God"
Read Joshua 1:1-9
"Be strong and brave, for you will be a successful leader of my people, and they shall conquer all the land I promised to their ancestors. You need only to be strong and courageous and to obey to the letter every law Moses gave you, for if you are careful to obey every one of them you will be successful in everything you do. Constantly remind the people about them every day and every night so that you will be sure to obey all of them. For only then will you succeed. Yes, be bold and strong! Banish fear and doubt! For remember, the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1:6-9 (TLB)
Kong Peng Sun, from Singapore, has noticed a tradition in the United States where newly elected public officers swear an oath ending with the words, "So help me, God." How relevant those words are! These people are saying that they cannot carry out the tasks of their office without God's help.
Kong has followed the spirit of those words ever since he came to know he is a child of God. Every time he embarks on a task which looks difficult and daunting, he speaks those words to God, and then proceeds with the task confidently, knowing that God will help him to accomplish it. Joshua 1:9 says it clearly: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." God encouraged Joshua to lead his people into the Promised Land. It was no easy task, but Joshua accomplished it with God's presence and power.
Whatever task we have before us - in our family, at work, in the community, or at church - we can be assured that God is with us and will guide us. Psalm 17:6 says, "I call on you, my God, for you will answer me." When we pray and place our tasks into God's hands, we can complete our work trusting in God's help.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your constant presence with us. Help us look to you for help at all times, in Jesus' name. Amen.
