O Lord, so many are against me. So many seek to harm me. I have so many enemies. So many say that God will never help me. But Lord, you are my shield, my glory, and my only hope. You alone can lift my head, now bowed in shame.
I cried out to the Lord, and he heard me from his Temple in Jerusalem. Then I lay down and slept in peace and woke up safely, for the Lord was watching over me. Psalms 3: 1-5 (TLB)
Linawati Santoso lives in East Java, Indonesia. Some time ago, Linawati had trouble sleeping for several nights. After sleeping only one or two hours, Linawati kept waking up. She remembered a friend once said, "If someone wakes up several times in the night, maybe they are stressed." It was true that during that time Linawati had many problems, but she didn't think too much of them. One afternoon when she was alone in the upper room of her house, Linawati felt a longing in her heart to worship God. Immediately she raised her voice in praise. That night, she slept soundly.
Linawati might have felt like she was not thinking about problems, but actually her soul was miserable. By praising and worshiping God, her soul was strengthened. it was as if her dry soul had been watered, and like David she could say, "I lie down and sleep...because the LORD sustains me." Our worries may not disappear when we worship God, but they lose their power when we arrive in God's presence.
Prayer: Loving God, even in the midst of our problems, help us to sing songs of praise to you, in Jesus' name, amen.
