Signs of God's Presence
Read Exodus 3:1-12 - Moses and the burning bush
And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him." John 1:32 (NRSV)
Kathryn Agnello lives in New Jersey. During the last days of her grandpa's life, her family and Kathryn took a break from the hospice center where he was staying and went for a walk. They went to a nature center where Kathryn noticed some mourning doves flying around them. She remembers thinking, Maybe God sent these doves to remind us that God is with us and will continue to provide for us even as we mourn.
When they arrived back at the hospice center, Kathryn still felt anxious and sad, but she was also reassured that God was present. God appeared to Moses through a burning bush, and in a similar way, God appeared to Kathryn through the mourning doves and continues to do so today. Whenever she feels intimidated by what God calls her to do, she looks for doves to come across her path, and often they do. Seeing them fills her with peace. She is reminded that God is with her and will provide what she needs.
God gives us physical reminders of God's presence. If ever we feel distant from our Creator, all we have to do is look around to be reminded of God's love for us.
For each of us that might look different: for me, when I see cardinals I think of my mom; when my daughter sees bluejays she thinks of her son; when there are butterflies, I am reminded that each day is a new beginning.
Prayer: Ever=present God, thank you for reminding us of your love in physical ways. Give us eyes to see the signs and wonders you place in our paths, in Jesus' name. Amen.
