Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3: 5-6 (NRSV)
K. Anne Smith lives in Tennessee. On a beautiful fall day, she drove along a narrow, curving road on a mountain in North Carolina. As she began the descent, multiple road signs warned, "Road Worsens After Truck Ramp." Anne gripped the steering wheel, tapped the brakes, and prepared for the worst. But the next several miles did not get narrower or curvier. In face, the road never worsened at all. At the foot of the mountain, Anne thought, 'Those signs ruined my drive!'
Then Anne thought about the ominous "signs" she places in her own path - like the one that whines "Day Worsens After Lunch" or the one that whines "Life Worsens After 60." Those signs ruin her day and invite fear into her life.
Anne doesn't need those signs anyway - Jesus has given her the guidance that she needs. Just as the disciples dropped their nets and followed Jesus, Anne should drop her signs and follow him. With Jesus by her side, she can ascend the mountain of her fear and move forward despite obstacles. And with confidence in Jesus' love, she can find joy in her life's journey. We too, like Anne, can drop those negative signs and with confidence in Jesus' love move thru this life without fear and experience joy instead.
How about having signs like, "Jesus Loves Me" and "Today is the Day That the Lord Has Made", or "Life Is Better With Jesus."
Prayer: Dear God, help us to trust in you and rejoice in the journeys of our lives. Help us to let go of negative thoughts so that we can follow you, in Jesus' name, amen.
