Shine Your Light
"You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." Matthew 5: 14-16 (NRSV)
Margaret Martin lives in Australian Capital Territory in Australia. One bleak, cloudy, autumn day, she went to do her grocery shopping. As she approached the shopping center, she was astounded by a liquidambar tree in the full glory of its autumn colors. Against the gray shy and gray buildings, the tree stood out with its bright gold and red leaves. it seemed to light up the world around it with its beauty.
Margaret remembered how Jesus said that we as Christians should be the light of the world and thought, "If only I could light up the world as well as that tree does! How can I improve my ability to do this?" Pondering this question, Margaret realized that she needed God's help - she needed to draw closer to God by reading her Bible daily and praying for guidance. As she tried to follow the teachings of Jesus more closely, she prayed that her light would shine more brightly and point others to God.
Prayer: Loving God, may our lives show others that we belong to you, not only in word, but in deed. Help us to shine brightly to the world around us, in Jesus' name, amen.
