Shifting Shadows

Read Psalm 27:1-5

The Lord is my light and my salvation; he protects me from danger - whom shall I fear? Psalm 27:1 (TLB)

But whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light, and he shines forever without change or shadow. James 1:17 (TLB)

Joanie Shawhan lives in Wisconsin. The warmth of the sun lured her to the window. Joanie noticed long shadows stretching across the snow-covered ground from barren trees blocking the light. A breeze rustled the branches and shifted the patches of darkness. As Joanie observed the contrast, it dawned on her that shadows only occur in the presence of light. She might feel overshadowed by darkness, but the light is still there.

Joanie was reminded of how her diagnosis of ovarian cancer cast shadows of doubt, fear, and anxiety across her horizon. She had more questions than answers: Would she survive? What side effects of chemotherapy would she experience? What about her future?

Amid her surgery and chemotherapy, silvers of light pierced the darkness. She recalled God's goodness and faithfulness in the past, and truths from God's word shined the light of hope, faith, and peace into her heart.

The circumstances of her life had changed, but God never changes. God is light that shines in the darkness. Even though Joanie encountered shadows in that season, they were fleeting. God's light penetrated the darkness and offered her the hope and courage she needed to face her challenges.

Prayer: God of light, when we are overwhelmed by fear and anxiety, help us to remember your love, in Jesus' name. Amen.
