Sacrifice of Thanksgiving

For God, who gives seed to the farmer to plant, and later on, good crops to harvest and eat, will give you more and more seed to plant and will make it grow so that you can give away more and more from your harvest.

Yes, God will give you much so that you can give away much, and when we take your gifts to those who need them they will break out into thanksgiving and praise to God for your help. So, two good things happen as a results of your gifts - those in need are helped, and they overflow with thanks to God. those you help will be glad not only because of your generous gifts to themselves and to others, but they will praise God for this proof that your deeds are as good as your doctrine. And they will pray for you with deep fervor and feeling because of the wonderful grace of God shown through you.

Thank God for his Son - his Gift too wonderful for words. 2 Corinthians 9: 10-15 (TLB)

I will worship you and offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving. Psalms 116:17 (TLB)

Kelly Mulligan Jamieson lives in Oregon. This verse puzzled Kelly the first time she read it. How can thanksgiving be a sacrifice? Kelly thought a sacrifice was supposed to be something difficult. What's so hard about being thankful, and why is it so important?

Years later, Kelly married and had five children. Her days were consumed with motherhood: driving children everywhere, loads of laundry, grocery shopping, cooking. She often felt overlooked and underappreciated. But then one of her children, with no prompting, would say the simple words, "Thanks, Mom!" That was all Kelly needed and wanted to hear! To be noticed and appreciated by those she loves always makes her day.

This is exactly the sacrifice God wants from us. We need to take our eyes off ourselves, take time to acknowledge God, and thank God for the innumerable ways he blesses us every day. This is a sacrifice of time and self. It means noticing the many blessings that uplift our lives. It means putting our eyes on God and giving God honor, appreciation, and thanks.

Prayer: Dear God, forgive us when we take you for granted. Create in us a spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving for all you are and all you do, in Jesus' name. Amen.
