Resting in Prayer
Is anyone among you suffering? He should keep on praying about it. And those who have reason to be thankful should continually be singing praises to the Lord.
Is anyone sick? He should call for the elders of the church and they should pray over him and pour a little oil upon him, calling on the Lord to heal him. And their prayer, if offered in faith, will heal him, for the Lord will make him well; and if his sickness was caused by sin, the Lord will forgive him.
Admit your faults to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous man has great power and wonderful results. James 5: 13-16
Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (TLB)
Missy Saiki is from Hawaii. As someone who wrestles with anxiety, she knows what it means to live every day with persistent worry. Instead of anticipating positives outcomes for situations in her life, Missy frequently fears the worst. She worries that she will never have the strength to overcome sins that she struggles with or that the dreams she has for her life will never come to pass. The list goes on.
When fear and worry threaten to consume her, Missy has a mighty, spiritual weapon that helps her: prayer. As James tells us: "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." Missy is not righteous on her own; but as a Christian, she is made righteous through Christ. Scripture encourages her to take every concern she has to God in prayer.
When she cries out and gives God all of her worries, her prayers take on a power far beyond her own. By faith and prayer, Missy can experience freedom from worry and receive God's transcendent peace in her mind and heart. Instead of constantly living in fear of what could go wrong, she can rest in prayer, knowing God hears her prayers and blesses her with peace.
We can do the same. God listens to every word, even if it seems trivial to us. Nothing is too small or too large for God to handle. Pray, and trust (believe) that God will answer.
Prayer: dear heavenly Father, thank you for inviting us to come to you with our worries, no matter how small or big they are. Help us to trust you, in Jesus' name, amen.
