Overcoming Challenges
Bend down and hear my prayers, O Lord, and answer me, for I am in deep trouble. Protect me from death, for I try to follow your laws. Save me, for I am serving you and trusting you. Be merciful, O Lord, for I am looking up to you in constant hope. Give me happiness, O Lord, for I worship only you. O Lord, you are so good and kind, so ready to forgive, so full of mercy for all who ask your aid.
Listen closely to my prayer, O God. Hear my urgent cry. I will call to you whenever trouble strikes, and you will help me. Psalms 86: 1-7 (TLB)
Marty Smith lives in Pennsylvania. After a difficult shoulder surgery, Marty was severely limited in his daily activities and spent many of his days alone. He developed anxiety and, according to his counselor, a form of PTSD. He was depressed, lost weight, and couldn't sleep. He was shaking uncontrollably. He was overwhelmed with negative thoughts. Daily he would call out to God, "Please help me, God. I can't live like this!"
One afternoon, a voice in his mind said, You'll make it. just that simple phrase. Soon after, with the proper medications, much prayer, professional counseling, and the support of his wonderful wife, Marty began to recover. He would not wish this experience on anyone. But through all of this, he gained new understanding and concern for mental health issues as well as a better relationship with God. When Marty learned how to truly open himself to God's Spirit and strength, God really did answer him in his time of need.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your strength and love that sustain us in our daily lives, in Jesus' name. Amen.
