Our Promise

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Romans 8:35 (NRSV)
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 (NRSV)
Camacho De La Luz Armando lives in Florida. He was eager to speak with his family in Mexico by phone. Camacho is currently in prison and has limited phone privilege. His wife was not available at the time of his call, but he talked with his parents, then his son, and finally his daughter.
As Camacho was talking to her, he detected something different in her tone of voice. Suddenly she started to cry and struggled to tell him that the fish he had given her for her birthday had died. Camacho tried to console her and explain why that might have happened, but she didn't want to talk any more. She simply said, "Bye, Daddy. God take care of you."
After the call, Camacho returned to his cell. He was overcome with sadness because he loved his daughter, and it broke his heart to hear her cry. As he started to read his Bible, Camacho realized how fragile we all are. But at the same time, he is ever grateful for the promise referenced in Romans 8:38-39 that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ. We know God will always care for us - God's unconditional love is our bond and our promise.
Prayer: Merciful God, when we cry out to you, reassure us of your promise that nothing will separate us from your incredible love, in Jesus' name. Amen.
