Orchids for Carolyn
O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples. Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually. Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgements he has uttered, O offspring of his servant Abraham, children of Jacob, his chosen ones. Psalm 105: 1-6 (NRSV)
From there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find him if you search after him with all your heart and soul. Deuteronomy 4:29 (NRSV)
Dayna Nestor is from Pennsylvania. After her heart transplant, she began taking time to slow down and reflect on the little miracles that happen in our everyday lives. Just after her operation, Dayna's mom asked her what she wanted when she came home. Dayna told her she wanted an orchid, She felt a new desire to learn about orchids and to take care of something while healing at home. She arrived home to find a beautiful purple orchid from her mother. She learned how to care for it, and it made Dayna smile.
The following year, Dayna received a letter from her heart donor's brother, and they started chatting over the next few months. Dayna learned that Carolyn, her heart donor, had saved the lives of several people by donating her organs. She told her brother that on Carolyn's birthday she planned to put flowers at her church in her memory. He replied that Carolyn had loved flowers, especially orchids, which she grew in her backyard.
At that moment they knew: God and Carolyn were sending them a little sign that all was well. Dayna is almost three years post-transplant, and she still collects orchids in memory of Carolyn. Every day during this second chance at life that God and Carolyn have given her, she watches for the little signs of God all around.
Every day is a gift of God and if you take the time to look, you will find His presence everywhere.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, when we see no way through our trials, help us to have faith in you and to trust your guidance, in Jesus' name, amen.
