That is what is meant by the Scriptures which say that no man has ever seen, heard, or even imagined what wonderful things God has ready for those who love the Lord. But we know about these things because God has sent his Spirit to tell us, and his Spirit searches out and shows us all of God's deepest secrets. No one can really know what anyone else is thinking, or what he is really like, except that person himself. And no one can know God's thoughts except God's own Spirit. And God has actually given us his Spirit (not the world's spirit) to tell us about the wonderful free gifts of grace and blessing that God has given us. In telling you about these gifts we have even used the very words given us by the Holy Spirit, not the words that we as men might choose. So we use the Holy Spirit's words to explain the Holy Spirit's facts.
1 Corinthians 2: 9-13 (TLB)
Mike Starry is from Virginia. Six months after he lost his wife of 43 years to cancer, he was still grieving. Heartbreak and depression lingered with him daily. His church family was supportive and his pastor had counseled and consoled Mike. Then Pastor Tom asked if Mike would talk about his experience of loss during a Sunday worship service.
When Mike saw Pastor Tom a few days later, he told him that he didn't feel worthy to share his story with the congregation. Without hesitation, Pastor Tom offered a warm, knowing smile and said, "Mike, you may not be worthy, bu God is and Jesus Christ is!" That moment was an awakening. Mike had been looking for relief and healing in himself, his job, and other worldly distractions. In just one simple sentence, Pastor Tom reminded Mike that he could let God's love and healing power lead him.
God sent Jesus Christ to give Mike a new life, so he could be assured, confident, and let others know the Good News. This simple truth has helped Mike transition from the grief and sadness of his loss to positive spiritual growth. Mike participates in activities with his church family, he prays daily, he studies his faith in Bible classes, and he acknowledges the blessings of the Lord at work in his life every day. His strength has grown, and life has become more meaningful. He is a testament to God's nurturing love.
It is so true, that too often we look to ourselves for relief when we really need to be looking at God.
Prayer: Father God, show us the way. Teach us to set aside our self-centered ways and to focus on you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
