Not Alone

Where can I go from your spirit? or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night," even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, doe darkness is as light to you. Psalm 139: 7-12 (NRSV)

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff - they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 (NRSV)

Victor Lugo Perez lives in Puerto Rico. Years ago Victor felt empty and wrapped up in loneliness. One say he was walking aimlessly down the road, and a passing driver offered him a ride. They drove to the city of Caguas where Victor listlessly asked for money on the street so that he could take the bus to San Juan.

Vicotr arrived at night and sat near a pier. he thought, Life is not worth living, and walked toward the edge of the water. He noticed a piece of wood on the ground, and when he stopped to pick it up, a pocket-sized New Testament that someone had given him earlier in the day fell out of his shirt pocket. When he picked it up, it was open to Psalm 23. Victor cried when he read the first verse: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."

Victor walked for a long time and finally stopped at the Salvation Army center. The people there welcomed him and offered him a room, toiletries, and bed sheets. Victor stayed for several days and began to experience God's love.

Today, twenty years later, Victor is secure iin the knowledge that Jesus Christ is his Savior. He is never alone because He walks beside him.

Prayer: Hear our prayer, merciful God, and fill our hearts with your love. When we feel lonely and empty, lead us from the darkest valley with your saving grace, in Jesus' name. Amen.
