My Rainbow Bible

Your words are a flashlight to light the path ahead of me, and keep me from stumbling. I've said it once and I'll say it again and again: I will obey these wonderful laws of yours.

I am close to death at the hands of my enemies; oh, give me back my life again, just as you promised me. accept my grateful thanks and teach me your desires. My life hangs in the balance, but I will not give up obedience to your laws. The wicked have set their traps for me along your path, but I will not turn aside. Your laws are my joyous treasure forever. I am determined to obey you until I die. Psalms 119: 105-112 (TLB)

About 10 years ago Abigail Gary, from Pennsylvania, picked up a copy of The Upper Room at her church. She enjoyed that daily meditations written by real people around the world who shared honestly about faith, forgiveness, challenge, and many other facets of their relationship with God. In an old Bible, Abigail began to mark each daily scripture reading with a different color so that she could locate it again easily.

A decade into this process, Abigail is still doing the daily readings, transforming her old Bible into a rainbow of yellow, pink, orange, and blue. To her surprise, there are few chapters that are not filled with evidence of the verses she has read, and she can find relevant passages quickly and easily. She is amazed at how much she has read without even trying!

Best of all, reading these devotionals and color-coding her Bible has helped her faith. The daily testimonials about Christ's workings encourage her to think about how he might be moving in her life. They also encourage her to faithfully pursue Christ's call to help the poor, welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, love her neighbor, and worship with others. She is learning that God is alive and at work - in other people's lives and in her own.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to learn from the writers who share their faith in these pages. Reveal to us how you are active in our lives, in Jesus' name. Amen.
