Music in the Mundane
Open the gates of the Temple - I will go in and give him my thanks. Those gates are the way into the presence of the Lord, and the godly enter there. O Lord, thank you so much for answering my prayer and saving me.
The stone rejected by the builders has now become the capstone of the arch! this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous to see! This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalms 118: 19-24 (TLB)
Kitty Espiritu-Ricafort lives in Manila, in the Philippines. She was washing breakfast dishes when she heard enthusiastic chirping right outside her window. Having lived in the heart of the Philippines' busiest city for over 30 years, Kitty was surprised to hear birds nearby. Where did they come from? Kitty wondered as she strained to catch a glimpse. Then it dawned on her: the usual cacophony of traffic and subsequent pollution had recently lessened due to nationwide restrictions. The result was a cleaner, more peaceful environment. So the birds were back! And their chatter was so delightful that Kitty stayed in that spot longer than necessary just to listen.
Clear skies and peaceful streets invited the birds on their rooftop, and with them came a new song that brought joy and delight to that weary city dweller. As Kitty made this connection and listened to the birds, she realized how often fatigue, confusion, and doubt can pollute our minds and block out the joy. But scripture can break through and renew our mind and spirit. When we seek God, our Creator will refresh us and show us that every ordinary day is something special.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for reminding us that this the day you have made. Help us to rejoice and be glad in it, in Jesus' name. Amen.
