Miss Mable

Then little children were being brought to him in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them; but Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs." And he laid his hands on them and went on his way.

Matthew 19:13-15 (NRSV)

Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. Proverbs 22:6 (NRSV)

Jim Harris lives in Virginia. After nearly 70 years, he stills has a clear memory of the nursery class in his childhood church. Miss Mable made the Bible stories come alive for us. She let us help tell the story as we placed felt-backed cutout figures of Bible characters on a board covered with flannel. When she told us the story of Noah and the ark, the children loved deciding where to place the lions and donkeys and other animals on the ark. Jim is eternally grateful to Miss Mable for her patient, loving instruction. But her love for each of them was even more important and helped them begin to understand the unconditional love of God.

When Jim was struggling with his faith as a young adult, he remembered the love of Miss Mable and the other people in that church. On a return visit, Jim was warmly welcomed. His life was transformed by seeing the gospel lived out in others' lives.

Here at The First UMC of Gulfport, we have many loving teachers, including Patti, Ken, Jim, and Rachel. Our children our fortunate to be able to feel their love and gain their knowledge thru games, art, music, and Bible stories.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for children. Guide those who teach them with your love and grace. Help us to encourage and support others who lead children in learning about Jesus, in Jesus' name. amen.
