Loving Eyes

Read Luke 15:11-32 - the story of the prodigal son

But God is so rich in mercy; he loved us so much that even though we were spiritually dead and doomed by our sins, he gave us back our lives again when he raised Christ from the dead - only by his undeserved favor have we ever been saved - Ephesians 2: 4-5 (TLB)

Rutman Lumbantoruan lives in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Twice each day Rutman spreads rice on the roof of the house to feed the wild birds. The birds gather around to eat and then return later in the evening. One morning while Rutman was sweeping, he noticed a bird with a wounded wing. Rutman brought him into the house to treat his wing, and he gave him a bowl of rice and some water.

Rutman watched as the bird ate, though he was clearly in pain. It made Rutman realize that the Lord also looked at him when he was lost and in pain. God looked at Rutman with loving eyes and helped heal his wounds.

After a week of care, the bird was finally able to flap his wings, although he still couldn't fly. Rutman had to help him join the other birds to eat on the roof. The next day, when Rutman went up to check on him, he was gone. As Rutman looked for him, he heard his singing from the roof. He could fly! Joy and pride filled Rutman's heart and gave him a small taste of what the Lord must feel when we return to God's ways.

Prayer: Loving God, thank you for the way you look at us with love and help us get back on your path, in Jesus' name. Amen.
