Letting Go of Baggage

If you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, in his good time he will lift you up.

Let him have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking of you and watching everything that concerns you.

Be careful - watch out for attacks from Satan, your great enemy. He prowls around like a hungry , roaring lion, looking for some victim to tear apart. Stand firm when he attacks. Trust the Lord; and remember that other Christians all around the world are going through these sufferings too.

After you have suffered a little while, our God, who is full of kindness through Christ, will give you his eternal glory. He personally will come and pick you up, and set you firmly in place, and make you stronger than ever. To him be all power over all things, forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 5: 6-11 (TLB)

Give your burdens to the Lord. He will carry them. He will not permit the godly to slip or fall. Psalm 55:22 (TLB)

When Larry Scanlan, from Maryland, traveled for business, there was one small Midwest airport where a number of times he encountered a frustrating experience. After the doors were securely closed, and while preparing for takeoff on a small propeller airplane, Larry would see the ground crew pulling checked-in bags from the airplane. Several times Larry sat in distress as he saw his own luggage being carried from the plane. He would be flying to his destination all right, but his luggage would be left behind.

Eventually, however, Larry put it all in perspective. The flight crew cared enough for his safety and that of the others on the flight that they checked the weight of the aircraft to make sure the airplane could safely operate.

We sometimes want to hold on to our baggage, as if we can control the burdens, worries, and hurts that life brings our way. Today's scripture verse from Psalm 55 encourages us to unload the burdens that weigh down our spirit and strength because they compromise our ability to effectively navigate life and God's will for us. Regardless of our circumstances, God is with us and wants to handle the baggage that weighs us down. God wants to take on our cares so that we can live fully for God, serving God's good purposes.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your loving plan of salvation. We give thanks for our Savior who helps to carry our burdens, in Jesus' name. Amen.
