Let Us Be One
How wonderful it is, how pleasant, when brothers live in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the fragrant anointing of oil that was poured over Aaron's head, and ran down onto his bread, and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew on Mount Hermon, on the Mountain of Israel. Psalm 133: 1-3 (TLB)
Roberto Fernandez-Acosta is from Havana, Cuba. During his first stay outside of his country, he attended a church of a different denomination from his own. He enjoyed months of communion and traditional hymns with the congregation. When Roberto returned to his church, he began to worship once again with the music of contemporary bands. The sermons of the church he had visited were presented in a calm manner and ended with a simple prayer. In contrast, the sermons of his home church became intense and ended with a worship time filled with cries of repentance and adoration. Roberto did not feel out of place in either church.
The change of worship style made Roberto reflect on the greatness of God who created us so different and yet so similar. There is no perfect church or liturgy, no singular way to worship - God takes pleasure in believers who have learned to live together in harmony, testifying to the world about God's love. Christians, no matter where we congregate - let us be one!
Prayer: Dear God, help us to contribute to the unity of your church and to live in harmony with others, in Jesus' name. Amen
