Let Go and Let God
Read 1 Peter 1:13-25 - For you have a new life.
If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don't ever trust yourself. In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success. Proverbs 3:4-6 (TLB)
Tryphena Ann Taylor lives in South Carolina. "Let go and let God" is a phrase Tryphena has often hear Christians use to encourage someone to consciously surrender a situation to the will of God. One particular experience put this phrase into perspective for her.
As her sight began to diminish, Tryphena received mobility training with a white cane and a sighted guide. She learned first hand how important it is to trust. One day after she had lost her sight completely, her son - who was not accustomed to being a sighted guide - eagerly offered to take Tryphena to church. With each step toward the church door, Tryphena found herself gripping his arm so tightly that her nails made marks on his skin. "Mom, Mom! You don't have to hold me so tight! I've got you!" Tryphena immediately loosened her grip, and when she did, her anxiety disappeared. They laughed together and proceeded into the church.
Tryphena wondered why she held him so tightly. Did her fierce grip reveal a lack of confidence in him? Even though she knows in her heart that her son loves her and would not let any harm came to her, her actions suggested otherwise. But when she loosened her grip, her son was able to guide her safely.
Where Tryphena had doubt in her son, there is no doubt with God. If we're experiencing something new, we may become fearful and may even lose our faith. This is the time when, instead of clinging to our own ability, we should release the problem to God who will guide, direct, and deliver us.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to trust you completely, in Jesus' name. Amen.
