Keep Looking Up
Shall I look to the mountain gods for help? No! My help is from Jehovah who made the mountains! And the heavens too! He will never let me stumble, slip or fall. For he is always watching, never sleeping.
Jehovah himself is caring for you! He is your defender. He protects you day and night. He keeps you from all evil, and preserves your life. He keeps his eye upon you as you came and go, and always guards you. Psalm 121:1-8 (TLB)
My heart has heard you say, "Come and talk with me, O my people." and my heart responds, "Lord, I am coming." Psalms 27:8(TLB)
Michelle T. Johnson lives in North Carolina. While walking her dog, she could not help but notice all the things he was missing. With his nose to the ground he was missing an entire world happening around him. Birds were flying closely, and squirrels chattered nervously as he walked by completely unaware of their presence.
Then it occurred to Michelle that her dog is not the only one with his head down. God began to show Michelle how often she literally has her head down looking at her phone. Often she is trying to be efficient and return messages or reply to emails, but she still has her head down and is not paying attention to what is around her. During their walk home, Michelle challenged herself to look up and around her more. It was amazing what she noticed. She noticed children playing in a pond nearby, geese flying in the pristine blue sky, and new buds forming on the trees. Through this practice God reminded her of one of her favorite scripture passages: "I life up my eyes to the hills - from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth" )Ps 121:1-2, NRSV).
Michelle cannot possibly notice all of God's creations if she has her head down all the time. Each and every day she needs to keep looking up so that she can see all the wonderful things that God is doing in the world.
We should join her in looking up at all the beautiful things God has provided for our enjoyment - birds, sky, trees, flowers, sun, and even the rain.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you so much for your reminder to keep looking up so that we can notice all that you have created and all that you are doing, in Jesus' name. Amen.
