Joy Amidst Grief
I can never be lost to your Spirit! I can never get away from my God! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there. If I ride the morning winds to the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, your strength will support me. If I try to hide in the darkness, the night becomes light around me. For even darkness cannot hide from God; to you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you. Psalm 139: 7-12 (TLB)
Ask me and I will tell you some remarkable secrets about what is going to happen here. Jeremiah 33; 3 (TLB)
Kristen Phipps is from Texas. In the months following her mother's death from ALS, Kristen started her first semester of college, began a new job, and painfully continued life without her mom here to be a part of it. As unbearable as life without her can seem, she still somehow manage to find moments of joy that the Lord offers her in her grief.
Jeremiah 33; 3 was her mom's favorite verse. Throughout her life, Kristen never saw her doubt that the Lord was with her. When her final days were coming, Kristen knew she was filled with peace and joy because she knew in just a matter of time she would see her Savior. She called out and God answered her - daily. She didn't know exactly what God was doing amidst her suffering - only that God was present and would never abandon her.
Even on days when Kristen's grief seems unbearable, she remembers that God walked through the ALS with her mom, walked with her as she witnessed her mom's life ending, and still walks with her today. She sometimes struggles to be joyful and to live in the present. But the Lord is right here next to her - sustaining her through it all.
And the Lord is right here with each of us, if we only ask and believe.
Prayer: Dear Lord, give us the strength to overcome whatever trials we face. We place our lives always in your hands, in Jesus' name, amen.
