In the Storm

As evening fell, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they took him just as he was and started out, leaving the crowds behind (though other boats followed). But soon a terrible storm arose. High waves began to break into the boat until it was nearly full of water and about to sink. Jesus was asleep at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. Frantically they wakened him shouting, " Teacher, don't you even care that we are all about to drown?"

Then he rebuked the wind and said the the sea, "Quiet down!" And the wind fell, and there was a great calm!

And he asked them, "Why were you so fearful? Don't you even yet have confidence in me?"

And they were filled with awe and said among themselves, "Who is this man, that even the winds and seas obey him?"

Mark 4:35-41 (TLB)

Madeline Twooney is from North Rhine - Westphalia, Germany. Due to a decline in her health, Madeline was forced to give up her career as a primary school teacher. The job had enabled her to support her husband and herself while he finished his university degree. This time of financial difficulty has been debilitating for them. God is good and has provided them with the means to pay their rent and other bills and to but food through government benefits. However, they have no money left over for other necessities.

As Madeline is writing this article, her benefits will be cut in two months. She wonders how they will pay rent and cover their needs. Her husband started a new job, but they're just scraping by. Madeline tries to focus on Jesus' calming presence, but the threat of homelessness strikes constant fear in her.

This afternoon, Madeline was in the kitchen when the sky suddenly turned dark. A storm blew in with strong wind and hail. Then, as quickly as it came, the squall ceased and the sun came out. As she stood on the balcony and soaked in the sunlight, her faith was renewed as Madeline realized that her husband and her are not going through this trial alone. God is with them in the storm, caring for and protecting them. And in time, God will bring them to the other side of the storm where the sun will shine again.

Prayer: Loving Father, thank you for your presence during our trials. When we face troubles, help us always to find you in the midst of the storm, in Jesus' name. Amen.
