In God's Presence
"Go out and stand before me on the mountain," the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain; it was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper. "

Tina Claxton lives in Ontario, Canada. One night she watched the sunset from the middle of the lake in a red canoe. Behind her the sky was a hazy purple; in front of her bright orange and peach. Stillness enveloped Tina, with only the sounds of the wild echoing around her. It was as if the Lord were inviting her to be still. In the silence she felt God speak to her heart, saying, "Trust me. Surrender to me." The weight of all her burdens lifted as she sat with God.
Tina was reminded of Elijah's encounter with God in 1 Kings 19. Elijah did not find the Lord in the mighty wind, in the earthquake, or in the fire. Elijah's encounter with God came in the gentle whisper, in the stillness. Often Tina looked for God in the big things, but perhaps God was best found when Tina quieted her thoughts and humbled her heart before God. Tina thinks being in the Lord's presence is one of the greatest treasures we will ever know.
We too might find the best place to talk with God is in the quiet, whether it be outdoors, watching a sunset, or in our room, quietly reading the Bible.
Prayer: Dear Lord, teach us to be still before you and to humble our hearts so that we may rest in your presence, in Jesus' name. Amen.
