In All Seasons
But the godly shall flourish like palm trees, and grow tall as the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted into the Lord's own garden, and under his personal care. Even in old age they will still produce fruit and be vital and green. This honors the Lord, and exhibits his faithful care. He is my shelter. There is nothing but goodness in him!
Psalm 92: 12-15 (TLB)
Karen Christy Kurtz lives in North Carolina. After years of walking the heart-wrenching path of dementia, their beloved mother passed away in her sleep. Karen and her brothers gathered in their mother's room to weep, remember, and pray. As they packed away her belongings, Karen picked up her well-worn Bible with The Upper Room tucked inside its tattered pages.
Karen turned to The Upper Room devotional for the day that Mom had died, and then to the Bible verses she had read just hours before her death. In her shaky handwriting, she had underlined the day's reading and had written UR and the date. Then she had penned, "How True!" at the end of the passage. As Karen looked through her Bible, she found this pattern over and over: UR, the date, and the words, How True! Karen sat and wept, sensing the presence of the Holy Spirit.
While her body and mind were failing, their mother continued her daily spiritual practice. Although she is gone, her powerful witness of God's faithfulness in every season of life will continue to speak to Karen and to many generations of their family. Karen is grateful for God's eternal promises.
Prayer: Loving and eternal God, we praise you for the people who have taught us to walk in faith with confidence and with hope. May your love guide us in faithful living all our days, In Jesus' name. Amen.
